Meet Tampa Data Scientist Danielle

February 2025: Danielle DeLosa is a data scientist in our Tampa office. This native New Yorker shares what she most enjoys about her life in Florida and explains how her work is used in many different ways at the Firm.

I'm the Firm's first dedicated data scientist

My background was originally in finance and economics. I have a Masters in econometrics, and that's really where I fall with the concepts of data science. I learned a lot about regression analysis; where you estimate the relationship between dependent and independent variables. I also really enjoy telling stories with data and using data to predict future events. I'm now doing an online, part-time Masters in Applied Data Science at the University of Chicago.

I'm part of an all-female development team here in Tampa

The Business Intelligence Development Department in Tampa is all women, which is pretty unusual. It's amazing to be surrounded by women who share my passion for development. We learn from each other and collaborate on multiple projects. This is a growth area in general, especially for law firms.

My team's work has multiple applications

I work mostly on the business of law, rather than the practice of law, across all of our functions. For example, there was a hypothesis that doing pro bono work helped associates build their skills— so we examined the data to see if this was indeed the case. For our clients and industries group, we can look at data around client growth firm-wide—what do they have in common? Other projects might be around lawyer utilization, which has some very practical applications.

AI is becoming an ever-more important part of what we do

I work closely with technology to test out some of the different AI tools that are emerging in the legal tech space. For example, right now, I'm building out a custom co-pilot to see where we might be able to use it more productively. And I'm working with the Practice Technology team to help the Antitrust group build out some use cases for clients, involving AI. Generative AI is going to be increasingly important for our work – it will help us be more efficient and effective.

I'm a native New Yorker who moved to Florida

I moved down to Tampa from Ne York to be closer to my family. In my personal life, it's a priority for me to be outside. I really like the outdoors. I like being on the water. Here, I get to do that and also have a great career. Our office is right at the start of the riverwalk—it's a two-mile path, which is a really nice place to jog or just enjoy being outside.

I have two mentors, thanks to the Women's Working Group

We meet monthly, to discuss topics and challenges that are relevant to women in the workplace and, in my case, women working in tech. I appreciate their perspectives and support, and the chance to connect with people I can learn from, including those from other teams and different parts of the Firm.

This is a great place to work

I started my career in data analytics and business intelligence, and then came to White & Case, initially as part of the Marketing team, and then I joined the Business Intelligence team. The leadership team at the Firm supported my dream of building a data science center of excellence, which was incredible empowering.

We all really love what we do and care about our jobs, and I have a good work-life balance. I had a preconception of a law firm being formal, but that's just not the case. The culture is super-friendly and open-minded. There's a lot of support for learning in development, which is important to me as I'm working in a field which is expanding and growing. It's an exciting time.
