My story so far
Prague Debt Finance associate Magdalena Lajdová

October 2025: Magdalena Lajdová is a Debt Finance associate in our Prague office. She looks back at her career to date, the day-to-day of working with colleagues and clients around the world, plus advice to anyone considering a career in the law.

Finding the perfect career path for me
As I grew up and faced the choice of what profession to pursue, I realized that I was drawn not only to logical and analytical problem-solving, but also to making a positive impact and helping others. Law became the perfect path-—-allowing me to safeguard others’ interests while engaging my empathy and passion.

Finding the right environment
During my studies at Charles University in Prague, I developed a strong interest in commercial and financial law. I wanted to join a truly international firm—one where my ambition for cross-border collaboration could flourish, and where the personal discipline I had cultivated as a former professional badminton player would be an asset.

When I joined White & Case as a legal intern in 2021 during law school, it immediately felt like the right fit—not only because of the professionalism of the lawyers, but also due to the high-quality work.

Starting strong, staying organized
As a junior lawyer, I discovered that hard work, reliability and team spirit are invaluable. I want to believe that the way in which I managed negotiations, deadlines and clients’ expectations—especially during periods of high pressure—has made me an asset to the team, and has helped build trust among my colleagues and clients.

Gaining confidence along the way
Looking back, I wish I had been braver in voicing my ideas and taking initiative earlier on. But with every challenge and every supportive nod from colleagues, my confidence has grown steadily.

Learning across borders
I am truly grateful to be able to work daily with clients and colleagues from different countries. Also, working in a global team means I’m never alone—colleagues across the Czech Republic, Europe and beyond are always ready to collaborate, share insights and guide me forward. This collaboration and these international ties have broadened my perspective, and I’ve benefited enormously from the mentorship and encouragement of senior lawyers and partners.

Leaving a mark beyond the brief
To me, being a great lawyer means more than delivering top-quality legal work. It’s about addressing clients’ needs, being the kind of colleague others genuinely enjoy working with, contributing to a positive culture and stepping up for social-impact initiatives.

Take the leap
To anyone considering this path—go for it. At the outset, it can feel overwhelming— with new expectations, people and processes. But every step, however small, brings growth. Embrace the challenge, be patient, use your strengths and you’ll get there— this Firm truly offers a spate of opportunities.
