November 2025: US law student Boyu Fu recently completed his 1L summer in our Tokyo office. Our ten-week Tokyo Summer Associate Program commences with a one-week induction in New York, followed by an immersive nine weeks in our Tokyo practices. Here's his report from a memorable summer in Japan.
Why did you choose White & Case for your 1L summer?
I wanted to build expertise on complex, multijurisdictional deals and use my Japanese and Chinese language skills. The summer exceeded my expectations. From week one in the Tokyo office, I was staffed on substantive international matters and worked across practice groups, including Debt Finance, M&A and Project Finance.
Tell us about the personal and professional highlights of your time in Tokyo.
Professionally, I found the work challenging in the best way. I introduced myself to partners and associates across practice groups, and soon the opportunities flowed in. Lawyers and business services staff were incredibly supportive by clarifying core concepts and sharing practical tips that helped me get up-to-speed quickly.
Personally, the office's yakatabune (houseboat) summer party was a definite highlight. It was my first yakatabune experience, and the night views of Tokyo Tower from the water were unforgettable.
How did you experience the global nature of the Firm?
I collaborated with talented lawyers in Japan, the US, the UK, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore, and learned how truly integrated the Firm is across offices and time zones.
Tell us something about the workplace culture in the Tokyo office.
It was supportive and inclusive. Whether I was working with a partner or a junior associate, I felt comfortable asking questions and seeking clarification. People were generous with feedback and invested in my growth.
Since you're currently studying in the US, how were you supported by the Firm during the program?
Exceptionally well. Practically speaking, the Firm arranged accommodation within walking distance of the office, which simplified life and saved time. In the lead-up to the program, they also supported with flight arrangements, immigration and made sure I was well prepared for life in Tokyo.
Did your experience live up to your expectations?
Absolutely! As a leading international Firm specializing in cross-border transactions, White & Case was a perfect fit. This Firm offers the strongest platform for long-term career growth in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Just as important, the culture stood out: I felt supported throughout the program and saw a clear path to develop as a cross-border lawyer.
