“The Firm has a vast and brilliant network”

November 2025: With more than 40 offices across six continents, White & Case has a truly global network. Many of our lawyers take the opportunity to experience living and working in a different country. Three of our Asia-Pacific associates explain what's motivated their moves, share highlights of their experiences and offer advice to anyone interested in a globally mobile career.

Introducing Hannah Bragge, Melbourne, previously London; Justin Chang, Tokyo, previously Melbourne and Seoul; and Clemency Wang, Shanghai, previously New York, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Why did you want to transfer to another White & Case office?

HB: I was eager to engage with a broader range of high-profile international projects and to enhance my expertise in project finance within a leading global market.

JC: When I transferred to Seoul, it was because I wanted to gain more experience working with Korean clients and export credit agencies on international project financings. When I moved to Tokyo, it was to take up a very valuable opportunity to go on a full-time client secondment at a Japanese export credit agency. On a personal level, I also thoroughly enjoy spending time in different countries.

CW: Each move was driven by different professional reasons, but the common goal was to gain exposure to more diverse work across our network.

How have you found the culture across different offices?

HB: White & Case's culture of collaboration and excellence is very much present in the London and Melbourne offices, fostering a supportive and dynamic work environment.

JC: There's definitely a consistent theme found across the network, such as a lateral, friendly environment and tight-knit teams. And of course, I have to mention the White & Case World Cup, which brings people together from all over the world and helps the Firm achieve that continuation of our culture wherever you are.

How frequently do you use your language skills?

JC: In Seoul, I used all aspects of my Korean language skills on a daily basis. It's essential that you are able to speak the language, as often your clients are not fluent in English. They value your ability to explain various contracts and results of negotiations in their own language immensely. Unfortunately, my Japanese is not as good as my Korean (but I am learning!), and for now I am content with conversing with Japanese clients on social occasions to build rapport and show a sign of respect.

CW: The amount of Mandarin I use definitely increased throughout my moves, from almost never in New York to nearly all the time in Shanghai.

How has your experience working across the network benefited your career?

HB: It gave me access to a vast array of high-profile international projects, expanding my professional network and enhancing my overall skillset.

JC: I received fantastic training in Australia (where I joined the Firm as a graduate), and moving has opened up opportunities to work on excellent deals. Transferring internally is also great for building your networks within the Firm as well.

CW: Transferring between offices has provided access to new and exciting work, and expanded my network across the Firm. I'm really delighted to be able to genuinely say that I've made many friends across different continents.

How were you supported by the Firm to make the move?

HB: The Global Mobility team provided great support for my move, including assistance with visa applications and temporary accommodation, and providing me with a generous relocation allowance, which made the move relatively stress-free.

JC: The Firm is supportive in streamlining the relocation process and helps you get your life sorted in what can really be a hectic time.

What advice would you give to someone considering a similar move?

HB: I recommend reaching out to someone who has made a similar move, so you can get a good idea of the work and team culture before you commit.

JC: Just take it easy and think of it as an adventure! There will be good work and great colleagues wherever you go. It's so good, I had to do it multiple times.

CW: Stay curious and be open to new ideas! The Firm has a vast and brilliant network. Moving between offices is a fantastic opportunity—embrace it.
