October 2023: Rafael Roberti is a partner in our New York office. He shares his plans for celebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month and explains how his identity has been an asset in his career.
It is always important to take some time to pause and reflect...
...And I think this is especially true for me and my family during Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. We often celebrate how much progress there has been in the Hispanic/Latinx community, and while we should highlight past accomplishments, I also use the period of reflection during this month to see what more can be done and how to accomplish it.
My heritage has helped me professionally...
...Successful client relationships are built on high-quality work and the ability to connect on a personal level. I have done a lot of work in Latin and South America recently, and being able to understand the culture and engage in conversations with clients with similar backgrounds helps strengthen the bonds with our clients.
There's still more work to be done...
...I have been fortunate to not have felt any tangible disadvantage in my professional career here at White & Case, but I cannot say the same for my family here in New York. My wife (from Colombia) and I raised our two daughters to speak Spanish and Portuguese at home. When looking at schools in New York, we were told that their English was not strong enough to be accepted.
I am still surprised that, especially in a city like New York, school administrators were not able to see the strength it is to have the ability to speak other languages and understand other cultures. This is why, during Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, while celebrating the past, we must also look forward to ensure progress continues.
Allies have an important part to play...
... Allies can continue to join and attend Hispanic/Latinx events, invite Hispanic/Latinx colleagues to client events and pitches, and participate in mentoring circles with junior colleagues.
The support of diversity at White & Case is a strength...
... White & Case does a great job ensuring that the Hispanic/Latinx Alianza network is recognized, not just during this month, but throughout the year. One of the greatest benefits I have seen is being able to connect with other Hispanic/Latinx people throughout the Firm.
It is important to understand that there are many different cultures within the Hispanic/Latinx world, so it is always insightful to hear from different communities within our network.
My advice to the next generation...
...I believe that we are at a stage where there are now Hispanic/Latinx people near or at the top levels of organizations, so you should make sure any concerns you are experiencing are heard by those people to ensure we continue to make progress.
How I'm planning to celebrate...
...My plan is to ensure that my daughters understand the importance of this month and its history. In addition to the events at work, there are several events throughout New York that we will plan to attend.
