Wishing all a blessed Ramadan!

To mark International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month in March, we recently hosted an important panel discussion on the power and influence of women-led movements around the world, where we were joined by social activist for women’s education and founder of Code to Inspire, the first coding school for women in Afghanistan, Fereshteh Forough; former Big Law attorney and Chief Advancement Officer for the Ms. Foundation for Women, Ruth McFarlane; and Iranian-British author, journalist and broadcaster, Kamin Mohammadi.

The panel explored topics including the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement in Iran, the recent law in Afghanistan denying women from the right to an education, and the role that women have played in catalyzing a number of social justice movements in the United States, including the Women’s March, Black Lives Matter, and more. White & Case’s Chief Diversity Officer, Hedieh Fakhriyazdi, moderated the panel, and the event was opened by Global Diversity Communications Manager, Beth Carter.

Our Frankfurt office recently hosted the White & Case Vis Prep Rounds, comprising eight teams from Czech Republic, Germany, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. The teams had the opportunity to plead in front of highly experienced arbitration practitioners and to help them prepare for the oral rounds of this year’s Willem C. Vis Moot competition.

Congratulations to this year’s winning team, The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn. Second place went to the University of Hannover, while the team from the University of Tübingen secured third place. We wish all participating teams all the best for the final rounds in Vienna!

This week our Tokyo office welcomed delegates from Harvard and New York University law schools. Following an introduction by partner Nels Hansen students were invited to network with partners and associates from across the office, giving them unique insights into our work and culture. Our Brussels office recently hosted the official Belgian National Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, comprising a record six teams, as well as 22 judges and around 80 participants, who were able to meet in person for the first time since 2019.

The respective teams pleaded “The Case Concerning the Clarent Belt” under realistic courtroom conditions, before panels of distinguished internal and external judges. The evening rounded off with a drinks reception to congratulate the winning team following a suspenseful two days of intense competition. The winning team will be heading off to Washington, DC in April to participate in the International Rounds.

A huge thank you to all those who took part, both in the Courtrooms and behind the scenes, for making the event such a great success. We look forward to next year’s competition!

White & Case recently hosted it’s Pre Moot in preparation of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, comprising 13 Teams, 25 judges and almost 100 participants, who were able to meet in person in our Düsseldorf, Berlin and Frankfurt offices for the first time since 2019.

The teams had the opportunity to work on this year's case “The Case Concerning the Clarent Belt” under realistic conditions and to practice their oral presentations as Applicant and Respondent in front of internal and external judges. Following the pleadings, the teams were invited to a networking event, where they had the opportunity to learn more about the firm. Many thanks to all attendees for making this event a success. We wish the participating teams all the best for the National and International Rounds!

The three-day induction program kicked-off in Melbourne, where the graduates had the opportunity to meet with senior leaders, understand the career opportunities available to them over the next 18-months, give back to the community through volunteering, and importantly, come together as one-group. Our Frankfurt office recently hosted a panel discussion in cooperation with the Network of Multicultural Lawyers (Netzwerk multikultureller Jurist*innen) on the topic of "Multicultural Professional Role Models". The discussion, led by Dr. iur. Abir Haddad, covered the importance of self-advocacy and how to focus on one’s strengths. During the lively discussion, panel speakers Dr. Murad M. Daghles, Dr. Ishak Jonas Isik and Dr. Kristina Neven-Daroussis gave personal insights into to their life and career paths as well as the challenges and benefits of having a multicultural background. After the discussion the participants had the opportunity to ask individual questions and to network with the speakers during the following reception. To mark Black History Month, White & Case’s US Black Affinity Network hosted Dean of American University Washington College of Law, Roger A. Fairfax, Jr. In his talk, “Honoring Black History, Measuring Black Progress: A Call to Action for the Legal Profession,” he spoke about some lesser-known lawyers from Black history who laid the foundation for Black progress and what the legal profession should do today to accelerate and maintain that progress. Partner and Executive Committee member Heather McDevitt delivered the welcome remarks and counsel Charles Moore introduced Dean Fairfax and moderated the Q&A.

Speaking about the event, Charles commented: “Dean Fairfax provided a wonderful history lesson, reminding us of the hard work and sacrifices of so many brave Americans. African-American history is American history. At the same time, Dean Fairfax provided a thought-provoking call to action that gives us a way forward. It’s good to remember where we’ve been, and, perhaps, even better to have a framework for getting where we need to go.”
