Social at White & Case

Over the last seven weeks, our US summer associates have participated in trainings and mock negotiations, real client work and, as a collective class, completed 2,677 hours of pro bono work. They have also taken part in a number of social events and activities including building their own ukuleles, making gnocchi from scratch and starring in an inaugural local office talent show. Despite being an entirely virtual program this year, our summer associates have been very busy! Thank you to everyone involved and for your hard work and continued engagement in making this Summer Program a success. To celebrate #Pride2020, our US Spectrum LGBT+ Affinity Network held a virtual Pride party last week that was hosted by the fabulous drag queens @peppermint247, @shequidahall, @christy_girlington and @fifiduboisdq. Colleagues and friends were taken on a fun-filled scavenger hunt followed by bingo, prizes and performances by all four drag queens. The evening was a huge hit and a really fun way to celebrate Pride at a time when we can't come together, in person, for our annual Pride celebrations with the White & Case LGBT+ community and allies. Thank you to our superb hosts for such a great show and to everyone who attended and celebrated with us!

To close out Pride Month for our colleagues, we were thrilled to host Avery Belyeu of @lambdalegal for a courageous conversation about gender identity and sexual orientation. For this global event, Avery addressed the current legal landscape of LGBT+ civil rights and how these issues impact law firms working to create inclusive workplaces. She also discussed key concepts and terminology and opportunities to apply this knowledge to increase LGBT+ inclusion efforts in recruitment and retention efforts. Arlene Arin Hahn, Partner and Chair of the Firm’s Global Diversity Committee, and two of our Spectrum LGBT+ Affinity Network leaders, Erin McNamee in the US and Alexander Underwood in London, shared fantastic remarks during the program. Arlene reflected on the connections between the Stonewall Uprising and the current Black Lives Matter protests, and the brutality of violence against the transgender and gender non-conforming community, many of whom are Black transgender women. She said, “There can be no Pride if it is not intersectional.”

A New York-based team of White & Case lawyers, working pro bono, recently successfully reversed the conviction of Eric DeBerry in connection with a 1999 shooting, in the first finding of actual innocence in New York State since 2014. Eric was released from prison on June 23, having wrongfully served over 20 years in prison and is pictured here on his arrival in Penn Station in New York City, with his wife Yvonne and with our associates who worked on the case.
