The sky is the limit in Hong Kong
Victoria Yu tells us about her working life in an exciting city and team

“This is the perfect training ground to learn and sharpen your legal skills”

We asked counsel Victoria Yu to tell us about working in Hong Kong and her White & Case career journey.

First of all, why White & Case?
The question for me was “why not?” I was working for an Australian law firm but was in search of a global platform. When the opportunity came up, I did a SWAT analysis and the answer was loud and clear.

What was your first impression of the Firm?
This has to be the people who work here. It is like a concentrated version of the United Nations. Diversity shines through with people from different backgrounds, cultures and interests but with shared dreams, core values and aspirations. I treasure the many long- lasting friendships that I have made over the years.

Why is White & Case the best place to start your career?
Our global platform opens doors to exciting and market-leading transactions and projects. As a lawyer, this is the perfect training ground to learn and sharpen your legal skills in terms of both the complexity and diversity of deals.

What is most exciting about the White & Case experience in Hong Kong?
It has to be the openness and willingness of the partners/leaders/associates at the Firm to listen and understand your goals, learning needs and dreams in order to become the greater version of yourself. The ideology and the core values of the Firm are to help you grow and pursue your paths here and beyond.

What is the one thing that surprised you most when you joined the Firm?
It is the dedication and work ethic of the people to their profession as lawyers and, of course, how busy it is—or can be.

Tell us a bit about the work you do.
I am part of the Bank & Finance team in Hong Kong. We work on loan transactions where we act for lenders (e.g., financial institutions, credit funds and PE funds) or borrowers (big corporates or sponsors).

We are involved in cutting-edge international transactions. It is fast-paced and you work with and depend on your team to deliver the best-quality product for your client.

How is White & Case different from other law firms?
In my view, I see White & Case as a big family where we learn to work with one another and each one of us does his/her best to make a contribution in the hope of achieving a greater future for the family collectively.

What is your most memorable moment with the Firm?
There are so many memorable moments. Traveling to Zimbabwe for meetings and, thanks to the hospitality of the clients, getting the chance to see the king of the jungle up close (but not too close) in a local zoo. That undoubtedly has to be at the top of the list.

What are you most looking forward to achieving at White & Case?
Becoming great at what I do and having an enriching and satisfying career and network within and outside of the Firm.

Sum up working at White & Case.
Collaboration, perseverance and grit—and the sky is the limit!
